Although educated with a Fine Art Degree Paul is essentially a self-taught artist of consummate skill and artistic merit. His liberal and evocative handling of colour and paint coupled with bold, expressively-laden, brushwork concretizes his representational vision in an impressionistic-realistic mode. With a richness of colour, spatial depth and paint plasticity he captures both the solidity of the landscape and the vagaries of the transitory moment with nature’s quixotic effects redolent of landscape artists of the nineteenth century.
Art to him is an expression of a profound spirituality that sits in equilibrium with the appreciation of sensual aesthetics. For him, to paint is to understand the substance of our reality, to relish in the grandeur of sight and finally to find the infinite within the realms of the finite.
“With the rise of digital art and photography, fewer artists are taking to the countryside when producing work. But Paul McGregor is part of the old school and likes to get his hands and boots dirty. Inspired by the practices of the Impressionists, this Yorkshire man likes nothing better than to paint en plein air. His landscapes in oil are consequently imbued with a blustery sense of atmosphere and movement.”
Born in West Yorkshire, Paul studied Fine Art at the Jacob Kramer College of Art and the University of Lancashire. He was the recipient of the “Jacob Kramer Most Promising Student Award “ and was a finalist in the “ Winsor & Newton Young Artists Award “ held at the Mall Galleries London. He was Artist in Residence at Burton Agnes Hall, North Yorkshire in 1997 and 1999, and in the 1990's was represented by the De Putron Art Consultancy in London. His work is in many Private Collections in the UK and abroad, including the Netherlands and Guyana, and is well represented in Lord Bath’s Wessex Collection.
