BACKGROUND
From an early age, Richard has felt compelled to paint whenever
possible. As a child he received a number of awards at the Annual
Children's Exhibitions of the Royal Drawing Society.
Richard spent his earlier working life employed in Architects' offices
creating perspectives and technical drawings, which developed his
considerable eye for detail. Any available spare time was spent
painting scenes of steam locomotives. In 1983 after the birth of their
son, Richard and his wife decided to switch roles, so that he could
spend more of his time painting.
In 1988, Richard had accumulated sufficient paintings to hold his first
solo exhibition, which was exclusively gouache paintings of steam
locomotives. The exhibition was extremely successful, culminating in
the sale of in excess of eighty paintings. This was followed by a
number of solo exhibitions, displaying Richard's steam locomotive
paintings, which widened his clientele.
In 1990, during a holiday in Vienna, Richard was inspired by the Baroque
palaces and churches to widen his subject matter to include general
architectural scenes. Since then, his portfolio has been extended to
include views of many European cities such as Prague, St Petersburg,
Moscow, Dresden, Lisbon, Florence, Madrid, Seville, London, Bath, York
and Cambridge. These have been executed using watercolour, gouache,
pencil, pen & ink and pen & wash.
Richard has exhibited his new range of work in addition to the trains at
a number of locations and the work has been well received. In 1995,
through his MP, he succeeded in selling a painting of the Houses of
Parliament and the Palace of Westminster. This was to the Rt. Hon Betty
Boothroyd, Speaker of the House of Commons. In addition to the
galleries, Richard has successfully sold many paintings through a
variety of public houses.
