Rob Wigham

Rob Wigham I have always loved painting and drawing. After a career as a military pilot lasting almost 25 years, on retirement I found myself free to return full-time to my first love: capturing the fleeting beauty of nature in watercolour. I am self-taught in watercolour and have been painting for almost 20 years during which I have developed my individual style which is realistic but strongly interpretative in nature. My subject matter is varied, but you will no doubt notice that water keeps cropping up! Watercolour is a beautiful, luminous and glowing medium which has a power like no other to capture the colours of nature. I love working in it: a single stroke can capture exactly what you want to say but by the same token the same stroke can completely destroy a painting! That's what makes it so exciting. I am primarily motivated by inspiration: sometimes a painting just suggests itself and creates itself before my eyes. I love to see the colours of nature which are all there for us to see if we only look. To me, the art of painting is all about seeing, not just looking. I spend a lot of time just taking in scenes and seeing the colours, which are always harmonious in nature. Shadows reflect the colour of the sky. Waves combine the colour of the sea and the sky as the light bounces off the particles in the water. Leaves both transmit and reflect. I spend hours trying to find the right colours and the correct degree of transparency for my paintings so that they will say exactly what I want them to say to the viewer.

My paintings are almost always started on site, through the medium of sketching in pencil and watercolour. I make several sketches, planning the tonal contrasts as well as the colour layout, before I finally commit to a full watercolour - sometimes in the studio, sometimes not. Sometimes I do the whole painting on site, usually because I can't bring myself to leave with the painting in progress!

Although I only started selling professionally a year ago, I have sold many pieces over the years. My works are now in private collections in the UK, Europe and as far away as the US and New Zealand. I derive huge and lasting enjoyment from my work. The creation of an artwork involves both seeing and experiencing a scene. I love to allow myself to really feel a scene or a view until I cannot wait to get paint on paper. In doing this, the viewer receives a piece of my perception of, and feelings for, the scene which will remain inextricably bound up with the work.
