Roy Hollinshead

Artist Roy HollinsheadI was born in Islington, London in 1962 and started my artistic interest from photo surrealist works i first saw during my college years (1979 - 1981) - where I studied art & design to A'Level standard. I have progressed and incorporated a strong element of scientific rationale in the production of images. I found the works of Dali, Jan Van Eyck, Holbein, Renoit, Hockney, Monet & the Bauhaus school of especial influence. Taking a chemical process such as 'electro-plating' metals and applying it to completely unrelated objects such as a human face and landscapes to see where this leads me is the engine for my creativity. Asking 'what if?' has been a principle driving force behind my work. Experimenting with anything and any media to see what happens is what is of greatest interest to me. With it boundaries can be pushed and removed, if only mentally. The results can be crazy and may not work the way I'd planned but with these techniques the continuance of experimentation is assured. Kinetics are currently of great interest to me. Studying the flow of movement within a room full of people or the traffic on a road layout and producing images based on the movements found there can produce unexpected results. The randomness and possibility of interaction are legion and unpredictable and not knowing where it will lead me is creatively exciting. One subject intertwines with another so a tapestry forms over time within which the body of my ongoing work can be seen. The largest exhibition I've held has been at the 'Cross Keys' Restaurant in Chelsea, London in 1997. I produced 42 paintings for this exhibition, which ran for 10 days. I have also been a member of a semi-professional film group and have designed numerous 'props', such as books, scrolls, wire frame models of human anatomy and 'technical documents' such as seismic scans for the un-earthing of dinosaur skeletons. I completed the visual design work for our feature film 'Infant' which comprised, decorated screens, an antiquated book, costumes and the skeleton featured in the film in 2004. After completing the films festival promotion, where we picked up a nomination for 'Best Horror Feature' at the Swansea Bay Film Festival in 2007 and went on to get a nomination and 2nd place award in the 'Best Feature' category at the Everglades international film festival in South Africa later the same year, I began writing, producing and completing my second film - 'A Different World' in 2009. I am currently promoting this film to festivals and therapy services. I have recently completed a digital animation course at a local college in preparation for a new art film I am planning to produce which will be called '3'. The subject will be the number '3' and will, as far as possible, comprise anything to do with '3' & '3ness' - even down to the musical score! Trailers for the first two films can be viewed on 'Youtube' under 'Taahlyn'. Roy Hollinshead 2012
