Ryen Huntley is a multifaceted painter who works in oils and acrylic. Her oil and acrylic painting is abstract and figurative while she is fastidious in her use of colour. There are influences of abstract expressionism in Ryen’s work; her technique and palette are heavily influenced by German abstract artists, Gerhard Richter and Anselm Kiefer and Austrian artist Egon Schiele.
Ryen was born in Northwest Louisiana in 1986. She studied at Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte, North Carolina. Here she experimented with pollick-esk techniques which later contributed to the creation of her current series, “Abstract Faces” expressing meaningful patterns in meaningless noise. After graduating in 2005, Ryen moved to the Northeast of England, here she shared a studio with her husband. Her primary focus during this period was to create the fundamental underpinnings of her technique through self-education.
Ryen’s current body of work “Abstract Faces” embodies the subtle ambiguity of cognition; what we believe to be true and untrue and how our brain manipulates pattern.
She and her husband are the founders of the Newcastle Artists Society, in Newcastle upon Tyne.
