Artist Sheila Vickers

After a childhood characterised by drawing, my first employment was floristry. Arranging beautiful flowers intensified my love of colour. I may have continued there had I not entered an Interflora poster competition for employees world-wide. Winning this was a huge boost to my artistic confidence.

A few years later I was executing pastel portraits on the spot at showgrounds and shopping centres. Commissions ensued for pets, buildings and scenes which vastly increased my experience.

While experimenting with watercolour I entered the ITV programme Watercolour Challenge and was presented with a portable set of watercolours. Being perfect for travelling and with pen and ink, tucked in my bag ready, I challenged myself to capture people's characters as they went about their daily lives. Paints not being as intrusive as a camera enabled me to sketch natural poses and expressions. Favourite subjects include cafe culture, bustling markets and children at play. Some are converted into pastel paintings with a little artistic licence.

I was also a Civil Servant for a while and when it closed down, I was commissioned by my employers to paint several portraits for leaving gifts and my design for a commemorative ceramic plate was chosen through a competition.

Travelling abroad provided a wealth of new scenes to paint. With fresh eyes I worked more intuitively. Acrylic paint allowed freedom to paint expressively which lead me full-circle as it is how I painted in my teens before painting realistically. So my work now includes semi-Abstract Acrylic on canvas.

In summary, my work has been varied and I still accept a variety of commissions.
