Sheila Williams was born and brought up near to Chepstow in South Wales.
As a child she loved to draw and paint and, on leaving school, it was a natural
step to go to Art College where she studied Illustration, leaving Newport College
of Art and Design in 1978 with a BA(hons).
Since then, she has exhibited and sold her work in the South Wales area, at
galleries in Bath and the Cotswolds and the Llewellyn Alexander Gallery in
London; as well as designing cards for the Medici Society and running art
courses in Wales and France.
Sheila's paintings reflect her love of the countryside , with subject matter taken
from the natural world. The interplay of light and colour is an important element
of her work, which became stronger and more vibrant in response to the clear
and intense light of South West France, where she lived in the early nineties .
On returning to Wales she established a successfull studio / gallery on the river
Wye close to Monmouth , where she could combine teaching and painting as well
as hold regular exhibitions.
It was at this time that Sheila discovered and began painting with egg-tempera ,
finding it's luminosity ideally suited to her style of overlaying and glazing colours ,
producing still-lifes of natural objects with simple and unassuming beauty , such
as eggs , feathers and shells .
She is currently living near to Chepstow once more , where she continues to
paint and teach . Here the vast , open skies of the Severn Estuary provide an ever -
changing backdrop and source of inspiration . Her more recent work has included
people and animals , seen in connection to the natural environment .
