Shirley Ann Tipping was born in Liverpool. She studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where she graduated with a BA hons degree in Fine Art Photography. Shirley lives and works in Glasgow.
“During the past eight years I have embarked upon a photographic exploration of the American West, beginning with old movie sets of a mythical Hollywood west, branching out to ghost towns, and finally encompassing all that remains of a pre-modern west. I grew up with images of the west and the influence of ’westerns’ on the TV screen. Maybe this has left me with the desire to explore and discover the idea of the west? During my last trip the work progressed to encompass a series of more contemporary images of 1940’s/50’s Las Vegas casino signage. As the project grows, my interest weaves in and out of decades of the discarded, abandoned, neglected, forgotten and disappearing west.”
“I have a diversity of interests, which lie in the meeting point of the mythical and the real west, in the transient and fragile nature of old film sets and ghost towns, the essence of the places/buildings/objects I photograph and their relationship to the surrounding environment.”
Shirley works within the traditional photographic medium using black and white film, her images are hand printed/toned and are limited to editions of 50. Although she works predominantly in monochrome the use of colour imagery does feature.
