My father was an avid painter before I was born, and I remember, as a child, frequently seeing his landscapes hanging in pride of place above the fireplaces of various homes we visited as a family.
Growing up I loved art at school, but my academic side won out professionally leading me into an IT career.
Throughout my adolescence I was fortunate enough to be acquainted with the now celebrated Alexander Millar. At the time he was a water colour artist who was able to produce the most moody and atmospheric moorland, mountain and riverside scenes you're likely to ever see. I remember his first "gadgie" painting, of four old blokes sat outside a bar, and I can still see it now in my mind's eye, hanging on the wall in his house in Tyneside.
My re-discovery of art was inspired by the recent birth of my first and only nephew in 2009. Every day he changes and adopts new and fascinating idiosyncrasies which I have caught on camera. I realised that many of the photographs could be transformed into interesting artwork.
I started, as my father years before, painting only for the benefit of family, giving my paintings away. However, the addictive nature of painting has rekindled itself in me and I seek opportunities to draw and paint whenever I can fit it into my busy life.
My paintings convey the wide-eyed innocence that exists in infant children. Sadly this all too soon disappears, and is replaced by the cynicism and apathy that is prevalent in today's world. I love creating these works, and I hope that they may give others a similar joy.
