After leaving Wimbledon School of Art, where Stephen studied sculpture and discovered his lack of ability in this subject, he gave up producing his own work to become a teacher. After a couple of decades of not producing a single artwork Stephen found his way back to producing art again.
The outward complexity of his work disguises the fact that it is created from the simplest of elements; rectangles, circles, triangles and lines. Add to these elements a love of pure, bright colour and you have the essence of his work.
Stephen believes in the intuitive and allows his emotions and instincts to guide the process of adding and removing shapes and colours until a composition is finally achieved.
A love of astronomy, music and the work of Kandinsky heavily influences his work, which is vibrant, joyful and, the artist feels, takes him back to his childhood days when playing with shape and colour was so satisfying.
