Stephen Higton

Artist Stephen HigtonSteve is originally from Nottingham and has been painting since he was a small child. Although his artisitic abilities were recognised from an early age and he won awards at school for his paintings, his dream of attending Art College was not to be and he spent his early adult years working as a draughtsman in various companies before climbing the corporate ladder within the Paper industry. A change in his personal life resulted in a new partner and a move to America, which brought about the opportunity to start painting again in his mid 50s. Steve and his wife (who is also an artist) joined a local art group in Utah, where they had settled for a short period. Encouraged by the critical acclaim of fellow artists and the success in selling his paintings in several exhibitions in the local area, he was spurred on to taking his hobby more seriously. Returning to England in 2008 Steve and his wife decided to settle in Suffolk in order to be near the sea, which has been the inspiration for so many of Steve’s paintings. He has also returned to painting in oils which is a medium he hasn’t used for over 30 years. Local artists of the past, such as Edward Seago, have been inspirational to Steve in this respect. Steve teaches a weekly adult education class for beginners in Art and has been approached to do workshops across the county for several Art Groups including Southwold, Beccles and Woodbridge Art Circles. He exhibits permanently at Picturecraft Gallery and Flint Gallery in North Norfolk and and Snape Maltings Gallery in Snape, Suffolk. He is a member of Suffolk Open Studios, Suffolk Art Society and Norfolk and Norwich Art Circle. Green Pebble (East Anglia’s premier Art publication) also features Steve in their latest publication..’How Artists See Nature”. Steve is also a memeber of SAA (Society for all Artists) and has recently won ‘The Best Landscape’ in their latest ‘Artist of the year competition. It is only now that Steve considers himself to be truly fulfilling his heart’s desire as he loves to paint the East Anglian land and seascapes and is inspired by the unusual and quirky.
