Artist Steve Phillips

I paint in watercolour - I enjoy the challenge of a medium which often has a mind of its own. Most of my paintings are scenes inspired by the coasts of Yorkshire, Northumberland, Cornwall and Norfolk.

I probably began painting at the wrong time, when a full time job and a young family meant that I could spend ten minutes sketching before other demands on my time appeared. Finished paintings would only emerge weeks or even months later when time allowed. This still seems to be my main way of working, with rough sketches being combined with memories of places and the happy accidents that watercolour often creates.
