 On leaving school I went to college to get some general O'level qualifications which included art. I then took A'levels including art again.
I then had a succession of office based clerical jobs (not at all arty and creative and not what I would really have liked to do ie fine art), but I did not think I could make a living out of painting. During this time however I did occasionally have solo shows and as part of local art societies exhibited in nearby towns and villages, mostly Chichester and Portsmouth.
I have come to Cornwall on holidays since I was about 10 years old and have always loved the wild coast and moorlands of North Cornwall.
It wasn't until 1997 that I discovered the west of Cornwall, and in particular St Ives. I was totally smitten with this area and the art legacy of the St Ives school.
I absorbed the history of the art colony and explored the surrounding beaches, villages and moorland. I would go home to Hampshire with sketches and photos and paint depictions of the coast that I had seen and recorded whilst on holiday.
I went back there every year and discovered more of the area such as the Newlyn school or artists and the Lamorna group. I made up my mind around the new Millenium that I would somehow move to Cornwall with a view to being a professional artist.
After a few false starts I achieved this and settled in St Just near Lands End in 2005. I am now on my third successive gallery in the coastal town of Penzance (The Tradstract Gallery, 11 Chapel Street. TR185JA). I use it as a studio as well as an exhibition space and paint there during opening hours. I enjoy experimenting with different styles and mediums and paint anything from figurative through to abstract but nearly always with the Cornish landscape as a basis for the works.
