A love of nature and the beauty of the land and sea are a major reason why I create art. A love of sensitive mark-making through drawing, and a structural approach to composing space appears in my work. I try to let the subject teach me what is important in the painting and I remain open to what happens in the picture. When I am planning a work, such as on the Lancashire coast or in Dorset, I take a series of photographs and sketches as well as notes. What is most important for my work is recognizing the truth of a place - the true spirit of the land or sea.
Timothy Gent, born in Blackpool, Lancashire in 1977. Brought up on the Lancashire coast, my teenage years formed my decision to become an artist. Evidencing a natural drawing talent, I studied at Blackpool Art College before studying a different discipline at Reading University for my BA. The flame that burns in the artist's heart was never extinguished and I returned to full time painting, as a professional artist in 2006.
