I have been a practising artist for 3 years. I am largely self-taught, however for a short time in the mid-eighties I attended Chelsea School of Art.
My work is primarily still life, and I use oil paints, as I love the rich colours and textures they provide. I mainly paint on canvas, although I sometimes use textured canvas paper designed for oils and oil pastels, and also wood. I like to work on all sizes of canvas, the smallest pieces so far have been 3” x 4” and the largest 6ft x 5ft!
Along with sales to, and commissions for, UK and international customers, my work has been displayed in and bought by London galleries. My flower paintings have proved to be very popular, and I have been concentrating on this subject for a while now. Some people have observed that the detail in my work can look quite surreal, where different shapes occur within the subject. One of my heroes is Salvador Dali, and perhaps his influence has crept into my work. I also admire Georgia O’Keeffe’s flower paintings, and enjoy the sensual aspect of her work.
I think that flowers and other plants can, in many ways, resemble the human body. Other artists I like are Vermeer, Van Gogh, Warhol, Cezanne. A more recent discovery is Audrey Flack, one of the Realist group of artists, who has painted some amazing still lifes. It has inspired me to diversify, and try some interesting compositions which I hope to present soon. I also enjoy abstract art, and have completed some commissions in this genre too as will as providing props for film and television including The Bill and Touch Me, I'm Karen Taylor.
