I began drawing when I was 6, and unusually for a young boy, found the time and commitment that becoming a painter requires. My interest in art was given further momentum thanks to the input of my art teacher at school. I had my first solo exhibition at 15 at a garage showroom Gateshead; becoming world-famous in Newcastle as the event was covered by the local newspaper press. Later, I had the pleasure of being taught by local artist Jan Reed at Gateshead College, where I studied a foundation course in art, then A-levels in drawing and painting, and fashion and textiles. However, I believe that most of my learning was done in my room or shed at home through creative experimentation. I have exhibited my work at the Matt Foster Gallery in Newcastle, Newcastle College, Manchester University, St James’ Park and at The People’s Theatre, also in Newcastle. What is my work about? My work is about my life, the lives of those around me and the human condition. My influences include the work of artists, actors and film-makers and influential individuals. These include Amitah Bachan, Clint Eastwood, Steve McQueen, Stanley Kubrik, Andy Warhol, Eli Wallach and Malcolm X. More recently, I have been influenced by my Islamic beliefs. Many of my works are a reaction to current affairs. It is from this emotional residue that my inspiration stems, often coming to me in the form of dreams. People have commented that my work is unusual in its style, and can evoke an intense and often passionate reaction from those who view it. I am unorthodox in my style and choice of medium. I will paint on pretty much anything with pretty much anything. I love to paint, often beyond 3a.m. I call these my most inspirational hours. I will go back to a painting again and again, until it sits right in my over-critical eyes. I am a self-critic when it comes to my work. My pictures are all about emotion and personal experience. Artists who are passionate about their work put their raw emotion into the brush. I can identify with this intense passion for art; as each painting I produce takes its emotional toll. It is like being in a short but intense relationship, one which is never meant to last. I aim to create images that have never been seen before, and which the viewer will never forget.
