This painting dramatizes a play of light in English woodland. It's a contemporary piece but it reminds me of Shakespeare too. This is a tribute to the way nature conducts a show, if we only sit and watch. Pictorial recession has been stylized to enhance the idea of theatre sets.
The stage is set - and yet already everything is at play. The spot-lit bracken proclaims a joyful yet fragile impermanence across stage to the patient dappled Oak. Perhaps this is about stable maturity complemented by momentary lightness.
The luminous backdrop hints at something beyond our day-to-day props: Being able to see the wood for the trees. I often learn from Nature and a little of that is in this painting.
