This is actually a linocut. The technique is suited to communicating expressive forms and was used extensively by the German Expressionist group 'Die Brucke' in the early part of the 20th Century. Linocut is really the same as woodcut, except the lino is much easier to cut and less wearing on blades. The linoplate is cut into after drawing. Ink (usually black) is then rolled over the lino and a paper applied on top. A wooden spoon is then rubbed on top of the paper and the image peeled away after. The parts that have been cut away remain white, white the remaining untouched parts are printed black.
My main reason for doing linocuts is the expressiveness and striking imagery I can create. They can also be easily reproduced and are therefore more affordable for the art collector.
The image here shows a man consoling a woman. It seems they are returning from somewhere. Perhaps they have received bad news, have had to let go of someone?? The picture at first seems depressing, but I think it teaches us that no matter what happens to us, there is always someone there to pick us up. Sometimes it can be a complete stranger.
