The painting comes from a mid winter visit to Alston, the highest market town in England about 1,000 feet up in the North Pennines. It is quite remote- about 20 miles from the nearest town and often cut off in Winter. I was interested in the bright wintry light that cast strong shadows on the buildings and the figure carrying her shopping home. Yet at the same time it gave a warm glow to the cottages in the middle distance with a lovely snowy backdrop of the fells behind.
