The title of this one was taken from the Eurythmics song of the same name (also used in the movie Nine And A Half Weeks) and only came to me mid-way through painting it.
The inspiration for it actually came from a photo-journalist friend called Brooke McKean whilst talking to her about her work during an exhibition. The initial idea was to just start with an urban cityscape at night as seen from the air, a grid system, with views of cars and street lights and little bits of night-life dotted around. Then, as the painting progressed the feeling suddenly shifted to be more of an up close and personal view, more of an, ‘across the street’, standing at a bus stop observation of what’s going on; as the city sleeps.
