Description of artwork Many people see masks as a means to hide who and what we are, whereas for others, including various indigenous cultures across the globe, masks are a way of revealing who we really are. Our inner selves, our alter egos, our wants, our desires… The Joker, from the movie The Dark Knight can be considered to be a Western cultural totem. A symbol of those that wish to openly express their malcontent at the world and those that hypocritically stand as guardians over the moral welfare of others. It’s easy to point the finger at them as someone to blame for the state of the world, but often times it’s the State(s) of the world that create them in the first place, and then rallies the world around to vilify them before these representations of all that’s wrong with our society can point out the true villains… But not this time. Hence the image of Gordon Brown on the card!
