St Marys lighthouse stands off the Northumberland coast just north of Newcastle Upon Tyne. It has an interesting history from being the subject of viking landings to housing french prisoners of war during the Napoleonic wars who were carrying plague. In the 18th century the promontory in the painting saw a public execution and the cove from which the island is viewed was a host to smugglers. The island and lighthouse are today easily accessible at low tide by a causeway and the lighthouse keepers cottage a welcoming cafe.
