This work is one out of a series of three paintings.
I am a Fine Art degree painting student at Central Saint Martins and this work, along with the other two pieces from the series, was displayed at my end of year show last month.
The women in the pieces are all escorts that are featured on a website where paying customers can exchange reviews and also rate these women on their appearance, performance, hygiene and their general experience with them- almost like a meat market. I did not want my pieces to be a commentary on the sex trade- I wanted it to represent my stance as a woman and my emotional need to censor these images, therefore deeming them useless for their purpose as overtly sexual images. I did not, however, want to wholly desexualise the images- women are as sexually liberated as men are despite many varied opinions on this. I am also a great believer that the female form is beautiful, providing pleasing aesthetics for the viewer, and that nudity should never be deemed offensive. What I do feel uncomfortable with, however, is when the body is used wholly for a sexual image, as with these images before censorship- I question the motives behind the images, and also, as a woman, am concerned about these women’s welfare.
These pieces were mainly painted with house paint and acrylic paint. This medium evokes so many of the ideals of a woman’s place being the home, and the actual use of very typically feminine colours reflects the stereotypical view that I feel is still very present in society today.
