Description of artwork Postage Stamp Collage--- Nelson Mandela celebrated his 90th birthday on July 18th 2008 and becomes one of the artists OITNY’s (Old Is The New Young). A former President of South Africa, he was the first to be elected in fully democratic elections. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti- apartheid activist and spent 27 years in prison (prison number 46664 can be seen in the upper background), much of it on Robben Island, on convictions for crimes allegedly committed while he led the struggle against apartheid. He is much admired worldwide and Pete has created the portrait in tribute to him with the flag of South Africa behind and a confusion of African postage stamps forming a riot of colour on his ethnic shirt.
