This is an interesting narrative painting. It takes the Biblical story of Judith and Holofernes as a subject. In this tale Judith is a Jewish noble lady who approaches the General Holofernes to appeal for her people’s safety and freedom. He takes a liking to her and summons her to his tent at night. In a drunken state he collapses on his bed where she cuts of his head. Aided by her servant girl she takes his head in a basket to prove to her people that their captors are weak.
