This is the first of a series that I've painted this year of the animals and birds of the Somerset levels. The water vole (immortalized as 'Ratty' by Kenneth Grahame in The Wind in the Willows) is a lovely little animal, much predated by mink, that I spent hours watching as a boy on the River Lea. Their numbers have dropped dramatically but there is hope, otters have been 'taking on' mink and where otters are recovering there are indications that the vole are also recovering.
