This artwork is an addition to a series of paintings which I started in 2009 of the Greek Island of Poros - as featured in Joanna Lumley's Greece!
Poros is a small Greek island in the southern part of the Saronic Gulf separated from the Peloponnese by a 200-metre wide sea channel. It consists of two islands: Sphairia, the southern part, which is of volcanic origin and where today's city is located, and Kalaureia, the northern and largest part. A bridge connects the two islands over a narrow isthmus.
This church is just a short walk around the corner from the villa where I stayed. It is situated right on the roadside which runs along the beach at Askeli. It is very small and dwarfed by an enormous palm tree. I particularly liked the wonderful rounded dome with its brightly coloured roof.
