With sleeves rolled up the working class man looks into the distance while his wife looks directly at the viewer, almost smugly her looks seems to say 'Look at him,he's mine'. But what is he thinking? Is he wondering why he came back after the First World War when so many of his friends didn't? Is he dreaming lazily as he looks at the skyline. Is he watching for pigeons? Who knows? The title is taken from the John Lennon song 'Working Class Hero'. This type of working class hero is long gone.
