Rather than a straightforward portrait the artist has tried to show three main aspects of his life. Firstly, a Stetson wearing celebrity, the smiling all American boy – his shirt made up from yellow roses on 32 cent stamps, the collar outlined with later 32 cent stamps representing the Statue of Liberty.
Secondly, a more colourful hugely successful singer with a golden microphone and a golden touch, America once more represented by stamps with stars and stripes depicted on his shirt.
Thirdly, stamps depicting Dracula fangs and tones of the blues show a sadder darker side, hinting at the troubles of a dysfunctional family and social life.
The brightly coloured background represents his colourful life where different colour vertical stripes represent both the bars of his imprisonment as well as musical bars.
