One of the more common tropes of comic books (and their film adaptations) is the superhero living a dual identity, whereby he masks his ‘real’ super heroic self behind a separate persona living a normal, everyday life. Often these secondary identities are those of relatively ordinary people, such as bumbling reporter Clark Kent (Superman), or high school student Peter Parker (Spiderman). Always one of the most dramatic moments in the comics and films is when Kent, Parker and so on, called upon to battle evil, rip open their outer layer of clothes to reveal the superhero beneath.

But what if the superhero persona isn’t the real identity at all, but a mask to conceal a quite normal person? So in this painting the usual scenario is reversed. The superhero rips open his spandex costume to reveal his true secret self - an ordinary man.
