Thames Barges setting sail at sunrise in the Thames Estuary.

I just love these beautiful ships, such an interesting past and although they are virtually flat-bottomed, they are still so graceful in the water.

My daughter and I were lucky enough to find this one moored close by at Keyhaven. It might sound sad to say that she was just a hulk when we saw her, but actually, she has a hopeful future as she was only stopping off in the shelter of the harbour on a journey, southwest, to be rebuilt and refurbished. We hope we might get lucky and see her again in all her glory on her way back.

We paddle-boarded all round her taking photos, hope they didn't mind. Once home again in my little studio, I had to research the masts and rigging as the hulk had neither. Then chose one of my photos of a sunrise over the Thames Estuary as the background and painted her starting out in the morning, her three-man crew setting just enough sail to get her underway in a light easterly wind.and then painted her again in the background.
