Used Postage Stamp Image
This picture is a triptych composed of three canvases bolted together with black plastic inserts. It is created from approximately 3000 used postage stamps. It is varnished plus UV protection but must not be hung in direct sunlight.
‘Girl at the fence’ is based upon an original lithograph by Alphonse Mucha from 1897. As a poster it advertised ‘Cycles Perfecta’ with a young lady relaxing over the handle bars of a bicycle. Here, changed to a countryside fence it still characterises Mucha’s style, that of beautiful women with long flowing hair, curving sensuous lines and motifs in usually muted colours.
Green paint has been minimally added to the skin of her cheeks delicately to reflect the quiet and peaceful countryside. On the other side of her face thin red hints pick up the colour of the ribbons around the waist of her dress hinting at the fire and anger implicit her windswept hair.
