Description
From the point of view of history, stories, song and folklore the Blasket islands are unique in what they have left as a legacy to the Irish nation. Their writers and writings are very much part of our tradition. Some of the most important works of Irish literature were written on the Great Blasket. These stories, translated into at least seven languages now, offer a window into Irish island life as it was lived for generations. Following a constant flow of emigration along with isolation from the mainland in bad weather, the island was finally abandoned in 1953.
