Description
This is a quiet, late-day piece that feels very much like a memory caught in paint — an impressionistic oil on canvas of a solitary evening outside a stone house in the Mediterranean hills.
A tall, weathered farmhouse anchors the whole composition, slate-blue, sage, teal and warm ochre, so the stone feels cool in shadow but still holds the day’s heat.
The tiled roof, the little chimney, the purple shutters left ajar with a flicker of yellow light, all of it is suggested rather than drawn, which is exactly where the impressionism lives.
The real subject is the evening light. The sky is a wash of turquoise and milky blue, melting down into a band of soft apricot, lemon and pale rose where the sun has just gone, the gentleman just sitting with his wine and cheese, watching the olive groves turn blue as night comes on.
This wonderful piece comes with a signed certificate of authenticity.
