Description
"An Ember Still Burns" is an abstract acrylic painting on 300 gsm paper, professionally mounted and framed. Four dark, weathered bands float in a deep field of rust and oxblood red. The surface is layered and gently distressed, so the grey forms feel like ash or worn metal caught in a warm glow. A single ember of red in the second bar draws the eye and introduces a quiet tension, as if something once burning has almost faded but not quite disappeared.
The work sits in conversation with colour field painting and artists such as Rothko, yet it is less about flat blocks and more about trace and erosion. The scumbled textures and soft edges invite slow looking and reward close inspection. At around 29 by 38 inches overall, including frame, it has enough presence to hold a room while remaining calm and contemplative.
This painting is part of my ongoing exploration of memory and stillness. The repeated horizontal forms suggest thoughts, breaths or moments, layered over time. It is a piece for someone who enjoys understated drama and a sense of emotional depth in their space.
