Low Fastnet 982 is one of the more colourful entries in the Shipping Forecast series, and makes no apology for it. Where a low pressure system might suggest grey and turbulence, here it arrives in bands of saturated yellow, cobalt blue, teal, lavender and deep crimson — vivid but held in check by the strict horizontal format that runs through the whole series.
A narrow pink line sits at the horizon, unexpectedly delicate against the broad sky above. Below, the composition grows increasingly tactile, the textured lower bands rougher in surface and warmer in tone, grounding what might otherwise feel weightless.
The "982" of the title is a pressure reading — low, falling, the kind that precedes change. The painting holds that sense of something building without tipping into unrest.
