Description
This beautiful oil painting of Fuller Mill featuring sumptuous hellebores was painted for the Iceni Botanical Artists' project to record the flora and fauna of Bernard Tickner's beautiful gardens at Fullers Mill and is included in the hardback book 'Fullers Mill Garden - a Jewel in the Forest' published June 2025.
Elegant hellebores—both white and soft pink—nod gracefully along a rich, rust-colored garden path in early spring. Their delicate blooms are rendered with intimate botanical knowledge yet painted with impressionistic freedom. Beyond, the garden unfolds in layers: lush evergreen foliage, bare-branched trees tinged with spring color, and the distinctive pink cottage with its charming conservatory against a dramatic sky of blue and grey clouds.
Painted with visible, expressive brushstrokes, the artist's sophisticated palette brings unexpected life to the scene—warm terracotta earth against cool greens, soft pinks echoing from flowers to sky to house.
The garden was created by the late Bernard Tickner MBE (1924-2017), who moved to Fullers Mill in 1958 and spent over 50 years transforming rough scrub and woodland into the garden seen today. Before his death he donated it to 'Perennial' who remain its custodians.
