Description
The last of the evening light in August burnishes the landscape with gold. As the sun sinks towards the horizon, the cool blues and violets of approaching dusk begin to gather, creating a fleeting moment between day and night. Soon the wild nocturnes will venture out, and I can almost feel their anticipation in the stillness.
I have used expressive layers of transparent watercolour washes to build the luminous sky and distant landscape, contrasting them with the darker, more energetic marks of the foreground. Fine linear strokes, splashes and dry-brush textures suggest the tangled grasses and seed heads, while the elegant silhouettes of the bullrushes rise through the composition, giving rhythm and structure. The interplay of warm ochres and golds against the cooler blues and violets captures that magical, transient light just before darkness falls.
