Spring Willows and Deer Oil

I painted this peaceful spring landscape to capture one of those fleeting moments when the countryside awakens after winter, and every tree, reflection, and blossom seems to shimmer with new life. Along the tranquil banks of the Great River Ouse near Houghton in Huntingdon, the delicate white froth of blackthorn blossom contrasts beautifully with the luminous fresh greens of willow trees just beginning to unfurl. I wanted the slow flowing water to become a mirror, weaving together reflections of arching branches, soft spring light, and emerging foliage into a tapestry of colour and movement. Nestled quietly at the water's edge, a watchful roe deer pauses before taking a drink, adding a gentle narrative that speaks of harmony, stillness, and the quiet beauty of nature undisturbed. Through layered brushwork and subtle shifts of light, I hoped to evoke the freshness, tranquillity, and promise that only an English spring morning can bring.
