Graham Wake

I am an abstract artist working in mixed media, primarily oils, acrylics, and pastels.

My process, initially at least, is driven by chance, allowing each painting to evolve without predetermined outcomes. The process embraces randomness with minimal constraints, structure or control. I create artwork that resists any overly formulated process.

The paintings are multi-layered, developed over months, even years, with works revisited, after dormant periods, before a decision is made on how to proceed with the next stage. Sections are subject to numerous reworks and repainted until the images and composition forms.

As the painting evolves my influence becomes greater, though I am working intuitively at this stage, reacting or responding to what has gone before. Eventually, the artwork, finds order and a compositional balance.

Abstract art, for me, sets the challenge of creating a piece of art that continues to offer something new and interesting with each viewing.

I continue to explore the relationship between shapes, scale and colour.
