An impressionist landscape painting featuring a sunset over golden reeds and reflective waters. With warm pink tones and elegant bird silhouettes, this piece brings a serene and atmospheric touch to any collection or interior space.”

Artistic background

Yan Yun Gao is a self-taught artist based in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Although her love for drawing began in childhood, it was not until later in life that she was able to fully dedicate herself to art. Starting out by teaching herself, she went on to attend numerous workshops and art courses to refine her skills and gradually develop her own artistic style.

Working primarily in oil painting, while also exploring watercolour and Chinese ink, Yan embraces a wide range of subjects including landscapes, still life, waterscapes, florals, pet portraits, and human portraits. Her landscapes, in particular, are recognised for their sense of calm, serenity, and relaxation. She believes that art has the power not only to please the eye but also to soothe the heart and resonate with the spirit. For her, every canvas is a new adventure — a journey of constant discovery and growth.

Over the past decade, Yan’s work has been exhibited across the UK at major festivals and exhibitions, including:
• Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition (2023)
• Mentmore Arts Festival
• St Albans Art Exhibition
• Harpenden Art Exhibition
• Ayot St Lawrence Art Show
• Cambridge Open Art Exhibition

Interests

I find inspiration in hiking and exploring natural landscapes, where the changing light and quiet atmosphere often become the essence of my paintings.
My love of gardening and cultivating plants deepens my connection with nature’s rhythms and subtle details.
Through yoga, Pilates, swimming, and tennis, I nurture balance and energy, which flow into my creative process and help me approach each canvas with clarity and calm.
