Quote
Born on 16 December 1981 during a winter of historic snow and frost, my earliest memories are shaped by a stark and lasting visual impression. At the age of seven, I began my artistic journey with watercolours in the isolated, unspoiled village of my youth. Immersed in that tranquillity, my early work captured the wonder of a child captivated by the natural world. Though I now practice under my legal name, Atomei, I continue to sign my paintings "Marin"—my birth name—as a tribute to these formative years and the heritage that first sparked my creativity. My passion for art matured into a rigorous academic pursuit. I embarked on my formal education at ESADHAR (École Supérieure d’Art et Design Le Havre-Rouen) in Normandy, France, where I refined my technical abilities and broadened my creative perspective. Subsequently, I advanced my studies at the University of Cambridge, where I studied a Diploma in the History of Art: Renaissance and Baroque. My academic research there further extended across the history of art and architecture, covering Classical to Renaissance and Early Modern to Contemporary periods. These experiences provided me with a profound understanding of the evolution of style and a deep reverence for the dialogue between historical techniques and contemporary practice.
Now residing in Warwickshire—"Shakespeare’s County"—I draw constant inspiration from the region's rich cultural heritage. This historical vibrancy serves as a vital backdrop for my creative endeavours, influencing my vision and adding layers of complexity to my compositions.
Working primarily in oil on canvas, my art is characterised by its diversity and a conscious engagement with historical masterpieces. I employ strong, expressive colours and dynamic textures to bridge the gap between tradition and innovation. My practice is marked by versatility, ranging from early tributes to classical masters to mid-career explorations in abstraction. By navigating different materials and media with fluidity, I seek to define modern art in a unique way, inviting the viewer to explore the intersection of technical mastery and experimental expression.
