Buying Art

Why buy original Art?

I don’t know about you. I read lots of books, but seldom re-read any.

Similarly, I seldom watch a film more than once, even ones I really enjoyed.

I know some people have seen “Love actually” multiple times, but for most of us knowing the plot, tends to take the edge off revisiting a book or a film.

Nothing could be further from the truth about original artworks. People are prepared to queue to see a Van Gogh, a Hockney or a Constable. Why does art have the power to make people look again and again? We all know what “Sunflowers”, “The Splash” and “The Hay Wain” look like, because we’ve seen illustrations in books and on posters all our lives. But when put on show in an exhibition, the crowds gather.

This is simply because original art has a power which supersedes just the image. You can see how the artist made the image, where an element is emphasised , how marks on the surface produce the illusion of reality or are added simply for the joy of the medium. And, you will see more, the more you look.

Thirst, By Mach One

If you own an original piece of art you will look at it over and over again. Each time, you will see something slightly different. I never get fed up of looking. Neither will you.

The vast majority of works on artgallery.co.uk are originals.
