Beauty Out of Ashes by Fiona J Rose:
The series presented in this collection draws inspiration from my formative years spent in Kenya. It remains a remarkable consideration—reflecting upon the distinctly unique nature of my childhood experience.
My upbringing was characterized by excitement and apprehension, yet always engaging. Throughout my youth, I maintained regular contact with diverse wildlife species in various contexts. Elephants would periodically invade my grandmother's farm and devastate the crops on the farm beneath Mt Kenya; white rhinos would move with unhurried grace along the shores of Lake Nakuru; and ostriches, well, they are truly extraordinary creatures, are they not—considerably more impressive when observed in person.
This narrative transcends the remarkable fauna themselves; it equally encompasses the conservation initiatives undertaken to ensure their protection. During 1987, I witnessed the incineration of ivory tusks—an event that proved profoundly unsettling given the substantial quantity consumed by flames.
In 2004, I participated in a safari expedition with colleagues and encountered an elephant that had perished with its tusks savagely extracted. I would not wish upon anyone the profound emotional experience of witnessing such a magnificent and imposing creature reduced to such diminished circumstances.
The campaign against the illicit ivory trade represents a collective responsibility in which we all participate. This commitment extends to all threatened species, including the white rhinoceros.
Conservation efforts have advanced considerably since the tusks were incinerated. Aviation has contributed significantly throughout this period, commencing with the gypsy moth initiative. Therefore, my conception of beauty encompasses the animals we have successfully preserved since the incineration of the tusks.
