Description
A striking study of two Friesian mares and their young foal, captured during a photoshoot as they move together through the long summer grasses. I was drawn to the sense of movement and companionship between the three horses, with their flowing manes, powerful forms and elegant presence creating a wonderful feeling of freedom.
Painted in Pan Pastels, I have used a loose, painterly approach to capture the atmosphere of the sunlit field and woodland beyond, while bringing out the rich tones and subtle highlights across their dark coats. The foal adds a lovely sense of youth and tenderness to the composition, contrasting beautifully with the strength and presence of the two mares.
I wanted the painting to convey more than simply three horses in a field – it is a celebration of movement, freedom and the quiet connection between horses.
