Roland Gift Blue Bicture Drawing

This is my Blue Ballpen drawing of one of my musical heroes, Roland Gift. My Blue Ballpen pieces - which I call ‘Bictures’ - explore differing rendering processes, challenging when working only with a Bic blue pen. I draw these with the paper ‘canvas’ on the floor in front of me. I lean over and gently apply tiny circles with the pen resting on my fingers, at various angles. This allows me to create amazing skin and flesh tones. These works are labour intensive but require the gentlest of touches, often taking over 50 hours to produce. Although this drawing could be described as hyperealistic I prefer to think of it as a more organic, tactile creation. Roland’s hair texture posed a superb challenge , which I enjoyed meeting, hopefully avoiding the typical ballpoint pen approach.
