Description
The expressionist painting is an explosion of colour in motion. Luminous yellows ripple across the orange-red surface, interspersed with flashes of flickering electric blue. The paint is applied thickly in some areas, creating impasto textures. The bold, sweeping brushstrokes dart and collide, giving the impression a dance. The title alludes to a line in the Cure's song 'Caterpillar Girl', and you might be able to see her in the top left of the painting: a hybrid - part girl, part caterpillar. Her head is surrounded by butterflies which are flying away, foreshadowing when she changes and leaves her partner. The viewer is invited to consider the synaesthesia of auditory and visual art, and the generational impact of art and music.
