Universe 01 Photograph

The UNIVERSE Series (Limited Edition of 10): The Universe is incomprehensibly vast — a silence so old it has outlasted every question ever asked of it. Are we alone in this dark, or is life scattered throughout? Perhaps we are just figures moving through some matrix? Philosophers, theologians and scientists have circled these questions for as long as we've had the words to ask them.
This series, was born on a shoreline of grey Jurassic boulders at Llantwit Major, South Wales. I sat there for hours, looking for the 'definitive' landscape image but it wouldn't be seen. The light slid sideways, the tide pulled back and returned, people came and went and still the boulders said nothing. Finally, my own 'big bang' arrived. What if these countless stones were planets? What if each planet, in turn, were only an atom itself cradled inside another, on and on, past any scale the mind can hold?
I photographed the boulders with that thought and they became worlds, universes. Later chapters of this Universe series surfaced as I photographed the three-hundred-million-year-old pink granite of Perros-Guirec granite of Perros-Guirec in Brittany, circling the same idea that we are small and folded into something immeasurably larger.
The cosmos may feel eternal. Our own fragile, blue planet is not, perhaps that is the quietest truth these stones have to offer.
