The legend of St Govan's Chapel in Pembrokeshire tells of a 5th or 6th-century hermit monk named St Govan who, pursued by pirates, was miraculously saved when a narrow cleft opened in the cliff for him to hide. He lived in the cell, eating fish and drinking from a spring, and used a magic bell to warn locals of returning pirates. The pirates stole the bell, but angels retrieved it after their ship was sunk in a storm. The chapel was later built into the rock on the site of his cell, and the marks from his ribs are said to be visible in the rock. The chapel was built into the cliff face in the 13th century, though parts of it may date from the time St Govan first lived there.
Legend also has it that no matter how carefully you count the steps which lead down to it from the footpath above, you’ll never get the same number on the way back up.
