Description

I present an original oil painting on professional board of one of my favourite places.

A sweeping view along the Tennyson Cliffs, seen from the high ground above Compton Farm on the Isle of Wight's south-west coast. The chalk headlands stretch away, streaked with the mineral colours particular to this stretch — ochre, slate, and here and there a blush of pink where the rock catches the light. In the foreground, late-summer heathland tumbles down through gorse and scrub towards the shore, the vegetation rich with the deep greens and warm browns of a landscape shaped by sea wind. The water here is often a pale turquoise close to the cliff base, deepening to a cooler blue at the horizon, with a clarity more often associated with warmer latitudes. Above it all, a broad summer sky carries just enough cloud to give the light direction and movement. Painted in oils with a palette knife, this is a painting as much about atmosphere and space as it is about a specific view — the particular silence and scale of one of the most dramatic stretches of the English coast.

Standard colour and light disclaimer - As with most of my paintings I'm more interested in sharing the feeling of the landscape rather than being slavish to the colours and the light source. I'd rather things bounce around and sparkle. I do hope this chimes with you too and you'd like to share a little part of this light.
